Description

Workshop topic:

On a fundamental level our understanding of Nature is built on the pillars of quantum physics and the geometry of spacetime. Yet, while the relation of the two is fascinating, it remains mysterious at the same time. This is because a direct experimental investigation in the laboratory is largely hindered by the weakness of the gravitational force.

However, recent breakthroughs in quantum technologies and materials design have paved the way for unprecedented investigations of the emergence of spacetime geometry for quantum excitations. In fact, it has become possible to engineer such emergent spacetimes in condensed-matter systems and study their physical properties, their universality, and the detailed relation between quantum physics on the one side and the geometry of space and time on the other, both, theoretically as well as experimentally.

For this workshop we want to bring together people working on such different fields of modern physics as ultracold atoms, quantum materials, synthetic quantum systems, optics, quantum field theory, gravitation, and physical cosmology. We want to identify opportunities and possibilities for research and progress in physics in the coming years in order to address some of the most fascinating questions related to the modern understanding of our Universe.

Invited speakers:

Laurianne Chomaz (Uni Heidelberg), Sebastian Erne (TU Wien), Maxime J. Jacquet (Laboratoire Kastler Brossel Paris), Lavinia Heisenberg (Uni Heidelberg, t.b.c.), Ulf Leonhard (Weizmann Institute of Science), Ulf Peschel (Uni Jena), Jörg Schmalian (KIT), Ralf Schützhold (HZ Dresden-Rossendorf), Silke Weinfurtner (Uni Nottingham), Thomas Weitz (Uni Göttingen)

Coordinates:

The Workshop will take place at Physikzentrum Bad Honnef from Monday, February 19, 2024 (with arrival on the evening of Sunday February 18) until Wednesday, February 21, 2024 (departure in the afternoon).

Costs:

Local costs (board and accommodation at Physikzentrum) will be covered for all participants and there will be no conference fee. Unfortunately we cannot cover travel costs. Please let us know if this causes problems and we'll do our best to find a solution.

Presentations:

Every participant will have the chance to present a poster. As the time slots for oral presentations are limited they will be distributed by invitation.
