Description

Gravitational wave astronomy and other astrophysical observations (such as those by the Event Horizon Telescope and the GRAVITY collaboration) probe black hole spacetime and strong field gravity in regimes that were previously unaccessible. I will discuss what we can (and cannot) learn about the nature of compact objects from these observations. I will also talk about "theory-agnostic" parametrizations to study modifications of general relativity, their current limitations, and what they could teach us in the future.
